Applied biology

In the applied biology course, you will learn about applied biology in agriculture (e.g. breeding of plant species and breeds), food, pharmaceuticals and energy, as well as its role in the economy and everyday life. The course builds on the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in biology lessons and links with chemistry, geography, physics, mathematics and other subjects in secondary school.

In this course, you will learn…

• The aims of applied biology and its relationship with biology and other sciences;

• Fields of application of genetic engineering, methods used in them;

• History of applied biology and related professions.

• Give examples of applied biology in agriculture, food and pharmaceuticals, and energy;

• Be able to analyse how applied biology relates to personal everyday life;

• Explain the links between basic and applied biology;

• Analyse, evaluate and give examples of applied biological applications of different groups of organisms;

• Explain and give examples of the fields of cell and embryo biotechnology;

• Solve dilemma problems related to cell and embryo technology;

• Link applied biology to sustainable development.

Schedule

The course will happen in the period from September to December 2022.

A total of 17 classes of 90 minutes are planned – some of those are live online classes (in Zoom), some are meant for individual or group work.

• How is studying taking place at Edumus School?

  Edumus School is a fully distance learning school. Lessons happen in live video conferences, and in addition to online lessons, students are given homework and out-of-class assignments.

• Who are the students at Edumus School?

  Upper secondary / high school students from several countries in Europe can study at Edumus School. Our courses are mostly designed for upper secondary / high school students (grades 10-12), but they are also open to students of younger age.

• Who are the teachers at Edumus School?

  At Edumus School, you will be taught by professionals in their field, who work in the course area on a daily basis. Before starting the course, all Edumus School teachers undergo a modern pedagogical and distance learning training.

• When do the online lessons take place?

  The live online lessons take place once or twice a week, outside school hours or on weekends. The exact times of the lessons will be agreed once the whole group is booked (unless specified differently on the course page).

• How do I pay for the course?

  The course fee is generally paid by the student. Some schools are ready to pay for such courses – you must apply in writing to your school administration. Edumus School does not guarantee that the school will reimburse your course fees.

• Can I count the course in my school?

  Each student who completes the course receives a certificate. If the course suits your school's programme, it can be accounted as an elective course. To do this, you must apply to the management of your school (specific requirements may vary from school to school).
